We are driven to make our neighborhood better.

Our Purpose

We are here to accomplish many goals. To get things done for the people who live here and act in their interest. As stated in our bylaws, the purpose of the West Maka Ska Neighborhood Council is:

  • To create a greater sense of community among the residents of the area

  • To have a voice in civic affairs affecting our community

  • To maintain and improve our neighborhood environment

  • To develop a sense of individual investment in the community

  • To promote social, cultural, recreational and educational opportunities in the area

  • To establish regular communications with neighborhood residents, other neighborhood groups, and government officials and bodies on issues affecting the neighborhood

  • To act and pursue the issues of the neighborhood in a non-partisan way

  • To represent the neighborhood before City boards, commissions and other government entities as needed

Here’s how we make better happen.

Celebrating our unique place in this city’s landscape. Connecting with our neighbors and activating our community. That’s why we’re here. The work we strive to do falls into 5 key areas:

Preservation & Progress

We believe in responsible progress, preserving and enhancing our residential areas while planning for and building housing that serves our whole community. We coordinate with organizations like the Bakken Museum to protect the wetlands and propel education. We work with city council to safeguard and enhance our neighborhood’s wellbeing - creating a safe, healthy and welcoming environment for all residents.

Conversations

We believe that all voices deserve to be heard. We bring all our diverse backgrounds, points of view and personal experiences to the table. To discuss, debate and align. To set our goals and realize them together.

Stewardship

We believe in our role as stewards of our heritage and architects of our legacy. From celebrating our native heritage to protecting the lake and shoreline, our goal is to pass on the things that make our community unique for future generations.

Conservation

We believe in protecting the biodiversity of our community; both natural - lake, wetlands, wildlife - as well as our human biodiversity: young and old, new and established, residents of all backgrounds, colors and world views.

Environmental Justice

We believe we are responsible for caring for our environment and advocating for equity. We work to improve and maintain a clean, healthy environment for all residents, regardless of race, color, national origin or income. We champion equitable access to housing, transportation and economic opportunities.
